Ferns at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh

I’ve gone fern mad – I don’t even know how it happened.

This weekend, on my final (boo!) RHS Level 2 study days at the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh, our teacher Greg let us loose behind the scenes in their (incredible) glasshouses.

It’s safe to say, we hit upon the fern mother load! Inside, outside. Shade, sun. Woodland, rockery. Ferns, everywhere!

I’m still giddy with child like excitement thinking about it all. I can’t put it into words, you have to visit. The main fernery is prehistoric and timeless and magical.

Desert fern Cheilanthes tomentosa – I’ve been recommended this desert fern by the BPS for a sunny patch in our garden. Will deffo give it a go having seen it at RBGE.
